Snake Eyes Turquoise Pin

General Store

This vintage Zuni silver and turquoise pin was made using a technique referred to as Snake Eye. Typically, the stones are shaped into cylinders and then polished on one end and set in the bezel thus giving the impression of circular or oval snake eyes when finished.

Measures approximately 1 1/2" long x 1/2" wide.

Though the Native American Tribes had been working with metal for generations, new and more precise silver working techniques were introduced in the 1800’s by artists from Mexico. As new techniques and tools were developed and shared across Native America, jewelry-makers began to achieve a much greater level of precision with their work.
