Vintage Zuni turquoise earrings, made using a technique called Needle Point. This technique requires extreme skill because of the remarkable thin slices of stone, which must be finely polished to points on both ends. Needle Point stones are placed in vertical settings that appear like thin turquoise needles when complete.
Measures approximately 2 1/2" long x 1/2" at their widest.
Though the Native American Tribes had been working with metal for generations, new and more precise silver working techniques were introduced in the 1800’s by artists from Mexico. As new techniques and tools were developed and shared across Native America, jewelry-makers began to achieve a much greater level of precision with their work.
