Though Native American Tribes had been working with metal for generations, modern silver working techniques were only introduced in the 19th century by artists from Mexico. In the 1870’s, the Navajo shared these techniques with the Zuni, who are thought to be the first to insert turquoise stone into silver settings. Across Native America, jewelry makers developed tribal styles, traditions, and expertise.
